Аннотация

This article investigates the theoretical foundations and modern interpretations of denotative and connotative meaning in linguistic studies. The aim of the research is to analyze classical and contemporary approaches that explain how meaning operates on literal and associative levels. The works of major scholars such as Aristotle, Mill, Saussure, Peirce, Leech, Lakoff, and Halliday are reviewed to trace the evolution of semantic and pragmatic theories. The results show that denotative meaning provides referential stability in language, while connotative meaning contributes emotional, social, and cultural richness. These two dimensions are not oppositional but complementary, functioning together in the construction of meaning. The study concludes that a full understanding of language requires analyzing both denotative and connotative meanings in conjunction. The findings have practical implications for semantics, translation, education, and discourse analysis.
